PREVENTATIVE BODY MAINTENANCE
WHAT IS IT?
The IHMS Preventative Body Maintenance program (PBM) is a program that allows for early treatment of musculoskeletal aches and pains that, when ignored, can lead to work or non work related muscle and joint injuries. During a PBM visit, a therapist may walk through the work area or come to the work site to observe workers’ movement patterns and ergonomic set-ups and make suggestions that can improve productivity, safety, and worker comfort. The therapist will also be available to consult with workers on work and non work related physical complaints or concerns and suggest appropriate prevention and early self-treatment options. This allows an employee to “catch” potential problems early and prevent injuries. Most of these manual treatments take less than 25 minutes of the worker’s time and can be done right at their work site or office. This is the most effective pro-active approach in preventing work related musculoskeletal disorders.
HOW IS IT BETTER THAN TRADITIONAL SERVICES?
In Vermont, a physical/occupational therapist can evaluate and treat musculoskeletal problems for 30 days without a doctor’s referral. Therefore, by having a physical/occupational therapist skilled in both manual therapy and ergonomics, the worker can be treated and the potential risk factor reduced, eliminating the need to seek medical attention in most cases. These services are usually cost effective as well.
Massage Therapy: is one type of manual therapy, but the background and training of most massage therapists do not allow them to adequately evaluate musculoskeletal injuries related to work recommendations to reduce risk factors.
A physical/occupational therapist trained in manual therapy will have the background in joint mobilization, muscle energy techniques, myofascial release, strain counterstrain, and massage, as well as in-depth training in therapeutic progressive exercise. These techniques applied correctly can quickly reduce the stress to the muscles and joints allowing for efficient movement.
